More Than Food

Around Dayton, two out of every three children live in poverty and a 2016 report ranked Dayton as the second hungriest city in the nation for families with children. To that end, The Hearth Community Place was established. They provide meat, dairy, bread, non-perishable items, and (in the summer months) fresh produce. Through The Hearth, an agency of the Dayton Foodbank, and in cooperation with Schwebel’s Bakery, Kroger, Costco, UDF, Dollar General and other local businesses, we serve individuals and families eligible for the Federal Emergency Food Assistant Program.

Our “client choice” model empowers food recipients to select items within each major food group that best fits their household’s unique needs. In a society that stigmatizes poverty, we offer food, acceptance, and support to overcome obstacles. Volunteers are needed for unloading trucks, stocking and serving. For information about volunteering, contact us at info@thehearthdayton.org or visit The Hearth Facebook page and The Hearth website for more information.

Unloading trucks

Each Monday from 8:30-noon, we need help unloading the trucks that bring food that the pantry uses. We need help getting food off the truck and into the Fellowship Hall to prep for the next day's pantry guests.

Stocking for the Pantry

We need help stocking shelves and keeping them stocked before and during the open pantry hours each Tuesday. You can come as early as noon to help stock or show up any time during the open pantry hours (2-7pm) to keep the food going.

Serving the Community

If you want to spend more time interacting with people and helping the families that come to the food pantry, then you might be interested in helping process and guide guests through the pantry throughout the day on Tuesday.  There are various areas throughout the pantry where you can serve including, passing out food, collecting carts, passing out produce, stocking stations, and even just being there to give a smile and an encouraging word!

Hall Maintenance

Several times per month it is necessary to clear out a portion of the fellowship hall for church events and then return the hall to pantry set up for the next service. If you would like to be on a crew that can help clear the pantry and reset it please let us know! This is a unique way to serve both the Church and the Pantry. **You must be able to move folding tables and chairs throughout the fellowship hall.

Donation Pickups

Our pantry is not only stocked from the generosity of the Dayton Foodbank but also by several area businesses that give us donations each week. We are currently in need of several volunteers willing to go to businesses, pick up donations and bring them back to the pantry for distribution. Schedules vary and are flexible. If you are looking for a way to serve that only takes up a few hours per week, this could be the project for you! Contact us for more information.
